Page builders vs bespoke: the real cost of ‘cheap’

Websites · Strategy · 2 min read · 29 July 2026

The template cost £49 and the site was live in a weekend. Two years later, the same site takes six seconds to load, needs eleven paid plugin renewals, breaks whenever anything updates, and the business is quoting for a rebuild. The £49 was real. So was everything after it. Let’s do the honest arithmetic.

What the template actually costs

  • The plugin tax. Templates do everything generically, so every specific need becomes a plugin — forms, speed, SEO, sliders, security to guard the other plugins. A typical builder site runs 25–40, several on annual licences. That’s a recurring bill the “£49” never mentioned.
  • The speed tax. Every plugin ships scripts and styles to every visitor. That’s how a £49 site ends up losing the five-second first impression — and page speed is a search ranking factor, so the slowness quietly costs traffic too.
  • The sameness tax. Your template is live on thousands of other sites. When your web presence is structurally identical to your competitors’, you’ve spent money to look interchangeable.
  • The fragility tax. Forty codebases from forty authors updating on forty schedules. When one update conflicts, your site breaks on a Tuesday and the fix is hourly-rate archaeology.
  • The lock-in tax. Builder content lives in the builder’s shortcodes and database format. Leaving means rebuilding — which is why “cheap” sites get rebuilt from scratch every two to three years.

What bespoke actually costs

More up front — no way around that, and anyone who says otherwise is selling a template with extra steps. But the ongoing picture inverts: hand-built code carries no plugin stack (fast by default), does exactly what your business needs (nothing generic to maintain), belongs to you outright (no licences, no lock-in), and gets updated rather than rebuilt. Amortise honestly over five years — purchase price plus licences, maintenance hours, speed-related traffic loss, and one rebuild — and bespoke is very often the cheaper number, before counting a single extra lead from being faster and clearer.

When a builder is the right call

Fairness matters: validating a brand-new idea, a short-lived event page, a genuinely tiny budget — use the builder, know the trade, plan the exit. Just make the decision with the full bill visible, not the £49.
